Backflow Prevention & Terminology

In water supply systems, water is normally maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow from the tap, shower, or other fixture. Water pressure may fail or be reduced when a water main bursts, pipes freeze, or there is unexpectedly high demand on the water system (for example, when several fire hydrants are opened). Reduced pressure in the pipe may allow contaminated water from the soil, from storage, or from other sources to be drawn up into the system. Backflow means the undesirable reversal of flow of a liquid, gas, or suspended solid into the potable water supply; a backflow preventer is designed to keep this from happening.

Backflow means the undesirable reversal of flow of water or mixtures of water and other liquids, gases, or other substances into the distribution pipes of the potable supply of water from any source or sources.

Backpressure means any elevation of pressure in the downstream piping system (by pump, elevation of piping, or steam and/or air pressure) above the supply pressure at the point of consideration, which would cause, or tend to cause, a reversal of the normal direction of flow..

Backsiphonage means the flow of water or other liquids, mixtures or substances into the distribution system, as a potable water supply system from any source other than its intended source caused by the sudden reduction of pressure in the potable water supply system.

Backflow Preventer

A properly installed and working backflow preventer will protect your family or business from contaminants flowing backwards into your household drinking water piping.

Cross Connection

A cross connection is a physical connection between a drinking water system and some other environment which could allow a backflow of contaminants to enter the drinking water. This could be a pipe connecting a customer’s drinking water system to the heating/cooling system, fire system or irrigation system.

Types of Backflow Preventers

Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker – This preventer is not very popular and is very unreliable, Pressure Vacuum Breaker – This preventer is popular in irrigation systems, Reduced Pressure Backflow Preventer – The best that money can buy, this preventer is almost always found in a commercial sprinkler system, Double Check Backflow Preventer – This preventer allows for the flow of pure water that is not susceptible to contaminants in the air.
